World Water Day!

World Water Day

World Water Day highlights the importance of fresh water and advocates for sustainable water use. We take water for granted, but there are so many people who live without it, and one day it might run out!

We have gathered some interesting facts about water around the world and some resources from Twinkl for you to use to raise awareness of water equality and sustainability.

  1. 1 in 3 people – 2 billion people worldwide – lack safe drinking water.
  2. 1.4 million people die annually and 74 million will have their lives shortened by diseases related to poor water, sanitation and hygiene.
  3. Global water demand (in water withdrawals) is projected to increase by 55 per cent by 2050
  4. In sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls spend an estimated 40 billions hours a year collecting water.
  5. "Almost half of the schools in the world do not have handwashing facilities with soap and water available to students.
  6. "It’s not only humans that require access to clean water. Every year, countless animals die as a result of water pollution.

So what can you do to help?

Save Water: Take shorter showers or don't leave the tap running when you don't need it.

Stop Pollution: Don't put harmful waste such as oil, medicines or chemicals down the toilet or drains.

Build Pressure: Raise awareness for the issue with your friends, family and neighbours. Write to your local council and find out about how your local water/waste is managed.
