Safer Internet Day!!

Being safe online is an increasingly important subject to explore with young people, the technology is changing constantly and it is becoming harder to stay safe. To support Safer Internet Day we have pulled together some facts and figures surrounding young people online which some people may find surprising!!

The following facts are taken from the OFCOM report of media use in the UK.

  • Nearly all children went online in 2021 (99%); the majority used a mobile phone (72%) or tablet (69%) to do so
  • Using video-sharing platforms (VSPs) such as YouTube or TikTok was the most popular online activity among children aged 3-17 (95%)
  • Just four in ten parents of 3-17s knew the minimum age requirement for using most social media
  • Children were more likely to experience being bullied via technology than face-to-face: 84% of 8-17s said they had been bullied this way
  • Nine in ten 8-17-year-olds (89%) said they had felt pressure to be popular on these platforms, with no difference by gender.
  • 32% of 8-11 year olds have seen something nasty or worrying online.
